Spring Exercise Cautions

While Spring is a great time to get outdoors and engage in physical activities, this is also where many of us can into trouble with injuries, insect bites, and more. Today let's review some of the most important spring exercise cautions.

Allergies: Spring is often associated with an increase in pollen, which can trigger allergies. If you're prone to allergies, Sometimes simple measures like using a saline nasal spray after being outside goes a long way towards reducing symptoms and less need for medication.

With regard to physical activity, the temptation in nicer weather is to do too much too soon. The tips below can save us all some grief.

Proper Warm-up: Cold weather may still linger in the early spring. Ensure you warm up adequately before engaging in vigorous exercise to prevent strains and injuries.

Trails and outdoor surfaces may still be wet or muddy. Choose appropriate footwear with good traction to avoid slips and falls.

With warmer temperatures, it's important to stay hydrated. Bring water with you, especially during longer or more intense workouts. Sun protection is key and as we've discussed before it's very important to take a look at what you're actually applying to your skin. If you are new here, you can take a look at prior discussions about the safety of mineral based sunscreens for most of us. As the days get longer and the sun gets stronger, protect your skin by wearing not only sunscreen, high quality sunglasses, and a hat. This is crucial, even on cloudy days. Spring is also the season when ticks become more active. If you're spending time in wooded or grassy areas, wear long sleeves, pants, and use insect repellent to minimize the risk of tick bites.

Spring weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared for sudden changes in temperature, wind, or rain. Dress in layers and bring appropriate gear.

Pay attention to how your body responds to exercise. If you experience pain, discomfort, or unusual fatigue, it's essential to listen to your body and adjust your activity level accordingly. Remember if you do injure yourself, early care goes a long way towards minimizing progression and complications. When in doubt seek proper help sooner rather than later.

If you're engaging in activities like running or cycling, choose safe routes with good visibility and minimal traffic. Be aware of your surroundings to avoid accidents.


Remember that individual health conditions and fitness levels vary, especially after winter season so it's always a good idea to consult with your physician before starting a new exercise routine, especially if you have any pre-existing health concerns or conditions.
