The Silent Issues That Can Affect Your Child’s Learning
Did you know that up to 25% of school-age children have an undetected vision or hearing problem? These “invisible” issues can quietly impact everything from reading comprehension and attention span to behavior and self-esteem.
As your child heads back to school, it’s the perfect time to make sure their eyes and ears are learning-ready.
Why These Screenings Matter
Children don’t always know they’re struggling to see or hear clearly. Instead, they may:
Squint or hold books too close
Complain of frequent headaches
Seem distracted, fidgety, or disinterested
Mishear instructions or ask for repetition
Appear withdrawn or frustrated in class
Unfortunately, these signs are often mistaken for behavioral or learning difficulties.
What Happens During a Vision & Hearing Screening?
At a back-to-school checkup, we assess:
Vision:
Near and distance acuity (can your child see the board and their book?)
Eye alignment and tracking
Signs of astigmatism or farsightedness
Referral to an optometrist if more detailed testing is needed
Hearing:
Response to tones across various pitches and volumes
Screening for wax buildup, chronic ear infections, or fluid
Referral to an audiologist if hearing loss is suspected
Early Detection = Early Intervention
The earlier we catch vision or hearing problems, the sooner we can support your child’s learning, development, and confidence.
Glasses, hearing aids, or therapy can make a huge difference in the classroom and in how your child feels about themselves.
