Are You Up to Date on These 5 Screenings Over 50?

Preventive Care Is the Key to Healthy Aging

After 50, staying healthy isn’t just about how you feel it’s also about what you don’t know yet. Many serious conditions develop silently over time. That’s why preventive screenings are critical. They catch problems early, when they’re most treatable and sometimes even reversible.

Here are five essential screenings every adult over 50 should review with their healthcare provider:

1. Colorectal Cancer Screening

  • When: Begin regular screenings at age 45–50

  • How: Colonoscopy every 10 years, or alternative tests (FIT, Cologuard) more frequently

  • Why: Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when caught early

2. Blood Pressure Check

  • When: At least annually, or more often if elevated

  • Why: High blood pressure often shows no symptoms but increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease

3. Bone Density Scan (DEXA)

  • When: Women at 65+, or earlier if at risk; men at 70+, or earlier with risk factors

  • Why: Osteoporosis can lead to fractures, loss of independence, and serious complications if not detected

4. Blood Sugar & A1C Testing

  • When: Every 1–3 years depending on risk

  • Why: Detects prediabetes or type 2 diabetes early, often before symptoms appear

5. Mammogram or Prostate Cancer Screening

  • When: Women should begin mammograms at 40–50 depending on risk; men should discuss PSA testing with their provider

  • Why: Early detection is critical for effective treatment and better outcomes

Prevention = Empowerment

These screenings aren’t just boxes to check. They’re tools to keep you living well active, mobile, and in control of your health.
