THOR Laser For Chronic Pain

Updated: Jun 7

Why do we we use THOR Laser for chronic pain? Laser treatment, also known as photobiomodulation therapy (PBM), is a non-invasive medical procedure that uses low-level laser light to stimulate cellular function. It is used to treat a variety of conditions, promote healing, and reduce pain and inflammation. Here's an overview of some of our laser treatments.

How does this actually work?

a. Light Absorption: The low-level lasers emit light at specific wavelengths, which is absorbed by chromophores in the cells, such as cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria.

b. Cellular Stimulation: This absorption leads to increased production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), enhancing cellular energy and promoting various physiological responses.

c. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: The treatment can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, facilitating tissue repair and pain relief.

d. Neurogenesis and Neuroprotection: PBM can stimulate nerve repair and protect against neural damage.

Applications

1. Pain Management: Used for in our primary care practice extensively for many types of chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and neuropathy.

2. Wound Healing: Enhances the healing of wounds from trauma, diabetes, ulcers, and surgical incisions.

3. Sports Injuries: Treats musculoskeletal injuries, very often reducing recovery time for athletes.

4. Dental Procedures: Alleviates pain and accelerates healing after dental surgeries.

5. Neurological Conditions: Clinically now in use much more for conditions like post concussive syndrome, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Multiple sessions are required, depending on the severity and type of condition. Research shows that 8 to 12 sessions are necessary to start to achieve effects and maximum benefit in many patients is achieved over 24 to 36 sessions. There also appears to be a significant maintenance effect in patients who participate in long term periodic care..

Safety and Side Effects: PBM is generally considered safe and non-invasive. Most patients experience no side effects, although some may report temporary discomfort or a mild increase in pain initially as tissues respond to treatment.

**Contraindications** Not suitable for patients with certain conditions, such as cancerous lesions or pregnancy, without specific medical counselling.

Research and Efficacy

Evidence-Based: Numerous studies support the efficacy of PBM for various conditions, though ongoing research continues to refine its applications and protocols.

Clinical Trials: PBM is the subject of many clinical trials, exploring its potential benefits for an expanding range of medical issues.

THOR laser treatment has gained international recognition for its versatility and effectiveness in promoting healing and managing pain, making it a valuable tool in both acute injuries and chronic diseases clinical and therapeutic settings. THOR has been extremely helpful in the development of many of our treatment protocols for many years.
