Heart disease is an entire constellation of medical issues and this is not meant to oversimplify. It is however a complex condition with multiple factors, often due to a combination of lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors.
Outside of congenital, the main causes of heart disease are quite simply lifestyle related.
The first is an unhealthy diet. Eating a diet high in saturated fats, trans fats, low in fruits and vegetables high in salt, and sugars can lead to heart disease. It may contribute to the onset of CAD, Coronary Artery Disease.
Physical Inactivity: Lack of regular exercise is a well known risk factor for heart disease. Current minimal recommendations by some respected organizations are improved but believe it or not are not as high as they once were. Once you have heart disease it is crucial you follow your primary care and cardiology instructions closely.
Smoking: Tobacco consumption is a significant risk factor for heart disease. Not only tobacco, however growing concern now is the number of people now smoking cannabis on a regular basis and studies showing it's link to heart disease. The reality is we'll see studies linking cannabis smoking to pulmonary or lung diseases, mental health, and more.
Other cardiac risk factors include obesity which obviously is associated with the dietary and lifestyle measures we just spoke about. Excessive alcohol consumption, our emotional health and stress management are also risk factors. especially when left unchecked. Of course every patient is different and multiple factors interact to affect heart health.
If it's been a significant amount of time since you've been screened for heart disease with a thorough physical examination by a Physician, appropriate laboratory tests etc, reach out to your personal Physician. If you live locally we're more than happy to help you.
